Built by someone who returned four monitor arms in a single month.

It started with a cable management problem and a very organized spreadsheet. In 2021, after six years of remote work and an embarrassing number of desk purchases that didn’t survive past week three, I started writing down what I actually kept versus what I sent back. The pattern was hard to ignore: products that looked good in review roundups routinely failed the second-month test — the one where the novelty is gone and the product either integrates into your routine or gets shoved into a drawer.

Desk Habit grew out of that spreadsheet. It now covers over 214 products across six categories, with a testing methodology built around the same question: does this hold up when it stops being new? The site is largely a solo operation, with occasional contributions from three other people who work differently shaped remote setups — different desk depths, different monitor configurations, different chair preferences — so that the testing isn’t just calibrated to one type of workspace.

Buy it. Use it. Write it up honestly.

The work here is straightforward: we buy office gear, use it daily until an honest assessment forms, and write exactly that — including the parts that don’t make a product worth recommending. Products we keep live on our actual desks. Everything else gets returned or donated, and the write-up reflects that outcome rather than papering over it. Affiliate links are disclosed on every page. Commission rates don’t appear in the scoring process.

There’s no editorial calendar built around affiliate opportunities. The testing schedule is driven by what’s being asked about, what’s changed in a category, and what we’ve personally been curious about. That’s the whole system.

Vision

Fewer impulse buys. More deliberate setups.

The home office market is full of products that photograph beautifully and underdeliver immediately. The goal here isn’t to help people buy more — it’s to help people buy less, but better. A desk with four things that genuinely earn their place is more valuable than one with fourteen things that were bought based on a roundup written in a single afternoon.

The measure of this site isn’t traffic or commissions. It’s how often someone reads a review, decides the product isn’t right for their setup, and saves themselves from a return they’d have had to process two weeks later.

How we operate

Six things we call non-negotiable

Return Policy

Willingness to publicly change our minds. If a recommendation turns out to be wrong — because the product changed, the category moved, or the original assessment was off — the review gets corrected with a date and an explanation. No quiet edits.

Desk Time

Nothing gets reviewed that hasn’t been used for real work over a real period. Press samples that arrive, get photographed, and leave the same week don’t count as tests. If we can’t commit to the time, we don’t write the review.

The Second Month

The first month with any new desk product is the honeymoon period — you’re adjusting, you’re forgiving, you’re optimistic. The second month is when you stop being polite about it. All final assessments are formed after month two, minimum.

No Commission Bias

Affiliate relationships are disclosed on every page. We’ve actively avoided partnering with brands whose products couldn’t honestly make the recommendations list. The products we earn commissions on are the same ones we’d buy again with our own money.

Update or Delete

Reviews older than 12 months that haven’t been revisited get unpublished. An outdated review pointing people toward a product whose quality has shifted is worse than no review at all. Every live page carries a last-verified date.

Setup Diversity

Products are tested across at least two different desk configurations — different depths, different surface materials, different room sizes. A monitor arm that’s great on a 60″ desk and terrible on a 48″ one needs to say so clearly rather than assume everyone has the same setup.

From sourcing to publishing

How a review actually gets made

Sourcing — bought, borrowed, or declined

Most products are purchased outright — either because they came up in testing research or because enough readers asked about them that it made sense to investigate. A small number come from brands that reach out; those are accepted only if the category was already on the testing schedule and only with a written agreement that the review verdict is unconditional.

We decline about 60% of brand outreach. If the product isn’t one we’d have bought anyway, we don’t have an honest relationship with the test.

Testing — daily use, logged conditions

Each product gets a minimum 45-day window of continuous use, during which we log specific variables: how often we interact with it, what adjustments we made, what habits formed around it, and what broke down. Ergonomic gear gets a minimum 90 days. Anything tested across multiple setups gets those conditions documented separately.

About 40% of what we test gets returned. The write-up happens anyway — a “here’s what didn’t work” is often more useful than a recommendation.

Writing — one draft, one hard revision

The first draft is written from the testing log — specific, unpolished, close to the experience. The revision asks one question: does this tell someone exactly what they need to know to make a better decision than they’d make without it? Anything that doesn’t serve that question gets cut.

Every review goes through at least one 30-day revisit after the first draft — to check whether the initial assessment held up with more distance from the product.

Maintenance — revisit cycles, not set-and-forget

Published reviews enter a 6-week revision cycle. If a product’s manufacturing has changed, if a better alternative has appeared, or if reader feedback surfaces a pattern we missed in testing, the review gets updated with a date stamp. Reviews that can’t be verified as current at the 12-month mark get unpublished.

Triggering a revision: updated SKU with changed specs, sustained returns pattern in reader feedback, or a better product emerging in the same price band.
